Dental health plays a huge role in our overall well-being. Proper oral hygiene and regular dental checkups help keep the bacteria in our mouths in balance and our mouths clean and healthy. When bad oral bacteria builds, fueled by leftover food particles and sugar on our teeth, it causes the disruption of the healthy stasis in our mouths that is required to protect our teeth.

As tooth decay progresses, there are signs and symptoms that we can see, feel, smell and even taste. Look for symptoms of tooth decay regularly to keep your oral health in tip-top shape.

Symptoms of Tooth Decay That You See

Some of the most obvious signs of tooth decay are the ones that you can see. As cavities form on the surface of teeth, tooth decay causes the surface to darken. Discoloration is easily confused for staining, commonly caused by drinking coffee or smoking. If your discoloration grows or continues to darken, however, it could be a clear sign of tooth decay.

If you experience bleeding or swelling of the gums, you may be suffering from gingivitis. Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease that causes redness, irritation, or bleeding of the gums near the teeth. Untreated, this infection can progress to periodontitis, a more serious infection that can result in tooth decay and loss. Pay attention to any swelling in the mouth, jaw, face or neck that is not the result of an identifiable injury.

Symptoms of Tooth Decay That You Feel

Pain or discomfort in the teeth, mouth, jaw or face should always be taken seriously. If you begin experiencing sharp pains when biting, aching in the jaw, or other sudden discomforts, contact your dentist as soon as possible. Mouth pain can be a sign of decay or even infection.

As the acid released by harmful bacteria erodes the protective enamel on our teeth, causing cavities, the dentin in our teeth becomes exposed. This exposure also causes sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures. Watch for pain when eating ice cream or drinking hot tea.

Symptoms of Tooth Decay You Smell or Taste

Tooth decay can leave a bad taste in your mouth, literally. As pH levels increase due to bacteria growth, high acidity levels can cause persistent dry mouth or bad breath. Bad breath that persists after brushing and flossing, or a lingering bad taste in the mouth, could be a symptom of tooth decay.
